Objects of Otla

A part collection of an extended assemblage of haptic objects that serves as a physical manifesto of a design approach rooted in land stewardship. The curation seeks to bridge the scales of architecture, product design and environmental research, illustrating a sensitive methodology where the land—its context, materials and ecosystems—acts as the principal guide for human intervention. The space is inscribed by a curated collection of– a basalt floor-table, custom lamp, a steel scaffolding bench, and a set of granite pedestals that can also be used as a stool, a side table or a footrest. Overlayed with an atypical approach to modularity, these objects are optimally designed artefacts that bring materiality to the forefront, with an innate ability to accommodate, adapt and evolve with changing contexts and use. Utilising raw, readily available Indian stones—studying its densities, hardness, porosity, traditional applications, origins and tools; imbued with the idea of modularity and frameworks—the collection is a fleeting attempt at understanding concepts of weight, lightness and luminosity. The collection seeks to engage the users into a tactile dialogue with the ground - the shaping of space and earth into intermediate places of activity, held within a larger ecological system.
