The Body as Instrument — Experiencing Through Touch & Perception

Our primary interface with the world is not purely visual, but deeply sensory and physical. Before we analyse or interpret, we respond through texture, surface, light, temperature, scale, and atmosphere. The grain of a fabric, the roughness of stone, the softness of light entering a room, or the feeling of a surface underfoot — these are all deliberate decisions designed to create an emotional response before a conscious thought. In design, the tactile is rarely accidental. Materials invite touch before they are understood. Objects and spaces communicate care, quality, memory, and intent without saying a word. Equally, the way these experiences are framed and perceived shapes how we connect with them. Photography, in many ways, becomes an extension of the sensory experience — capturing mood, texture, stillness, and atmosphere in ways that allow people to feel a space without physically inhabiting it. Across architecture, fashion, craft, photography, and product design, creators are constantly shaping how the body experiences the world. This session brings together designers, makers, and visual storytellers to explore how texture, materiality, light, and perception influence emotion and memory. What does it mean to create something that feels as meaningful as it looks? How do spaces, objects, and images evoke emotion through the senses? And how do we design experiences that remain deeply human, tactile, and emotionally resonant in a fast-moving visual culture?
